Ansarullah ‘chief’ remanded
A court in Dhaka has granted police seven days to question three suspected members of Ansarullah Bangla Team, including ‘chief’ Md Abul Bashar, over the murder of writer-blogger Avijit Roy.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud gave police the permission on Friday, a day after their arrest.
The two others are its media wing members Julhas Biswas and Jafran Al Hasan.
Investigator Detective Branch Sub-Inspector Fazlur Rahman pleaded with the court for a 10-day remand.
The magistrate rejected a petition to bail Hasan and granted police seven days to grill them.
After their arrest at Fakirapool on Thursday afternoon, RAB said Bashar, brother of Ansarullah Bangla Team chief Jasim Uddin Rahmani, was currently leading the banned outfit.
Rahmani was giving instructions through Bashar from jail to kill the bloggers and conduct other activities, the elite police unit said.
Biswas and Hasan were tasked with claiming responsibilities for the murders using several names, RAB said.
It also said the same team killed Roy in Dhaka on Feb 26 and blogger Ananta Bijoy Das in Sylhet on May 12.
Suspected members of Ansarullah Bangla Team Touhidur Rahman, Aminul Mollik, Ariful Islam, Jakirul Prokash and Sadeque Ali Mithu have been implicated in both the cases over murders of Roy and Das.
Rahman, a Bangladeshi-origin British citizen, was the mastermind of the murders
